Step 1

What materials do you already have?

Pick all that apply. Each one unlocks different ingestion blocks in the backbone.

EM works even with a single type of material. Pick everything you have — no need to wait until your evidence base is complete.

Step 2

What do you want to do with them?

One or more goals. The 5-step backbone in Step 3 will highlight the route to each.

Step 3

Your path on the 5-step backbone

Based on the 5-step reconstructive process (Demetrescu & Ferdani, 2021). The backbone supports both reconstruction workflows and broader knowledge-graph applications: any step can lead to publication or to a representation model, depending on your goals.

2Data Management & Analysis
3Implementation & Virtual Reconstruction
4Representation Model
5Publication & Dissemination
Spine — always part of EM Active for your path Other EM options (ecosystem view) Coming (in development)
A note on the manual links. Manual links point at the EM documentation site and some are still placeholders pending the docs restructure. Blocks marked "coming" are roadmap items, visible so you know where the ecosystem is heading.

Mini-FAQ

What if I have nothing yet?

Pick nothing in Step 1 and just choose a goal — the picker highlights the three spine blocks (DosCO, proxies, matrix) you'd need regardless. They're always part of EM.

My tool isn't listed under materials — why?

The picker only surfaces materials EM currently has a documented ingestion path for. Geophysics, for example, is on the roadmap and appears in the schema dimmed with a "coming" label. If you have a use case for something else, tell us in the community channel.

Can I share this configuration with a colleague?

Yes — use the "Copy link to this configuration" button under Step 3. The link encodes your selections and reopens to the same view.

How is this different from the Start page?

The Start page answers "who are you?" (archaeologist, modeller, developer). This page answers "what's on your desk and what do you want to publish?" — pick both and the workflow assembles itself.
