Bone weathering stages (Behrensmeyer 1978)
Stadi di alterazione dell'osso (Behrensmeyer 1978) — an Extended Matrix vocabulary module.
A six-stage ordinal scale describing the progressive surface alteration of
bone exposed on or near the ground surface. Definitions here are restatements, not
transcriptions, of the stages published by A. K. Behrensmeyer in 1978.

0 Weathering stage 0

Surface intact and greasy in appearance, with no cracking or flaking; soft tissue may still adhere.
Stadio di alterazione 0 — Superficie integra e di aspetto untuoso, senza fessurazioni ne' sfaldature; puo' esserci ancora tessuto molle aderente.

1 Weathering stage 1
https://w3id.org/extendedmatrix/vocab/taph-weathering/stage-1
First cracking appears, running parallel to the fibre structure of the bone; articular surfaces may show a mosaic pattern of fine cracks.

2 Weathering stage 2
https://w3id.org/extendedmatrix/vocab/taph-weathering/stage-2
The outermost layers of compact bone begin to flake away, usually along existing cracks; flakes are thin and still partly attached, and cracking has deepened.

3 Weathering stage 3
https://w3id.org/extendedmatrix/vocab/taph-weathering/stage-3
Patches of rough, uniformly altered compact bone appear, with a fibrous texture; alteration penetrates roughly one to one and a half millimetres and the original surface is no longer preserved in those patches.

4 Weathering stage 4
https://w3id.org/extendedmatrix/vocab/taph-weathering/stage-4
The whole surface is coarsely fibrous and rough; splinters are loose and detach easily, and the alteration reaches the inner cavities of the bone.

5 Weathering stage 5
https://w3id.org/extendedmatrix/vocab/taph-weathering/stage-5
The bone is disintegrating in place into large splinters; the original shape of the element may no longer be determinable.
